    Conference Itinerary

    Thursday 10/3/19: Recent Advances in Understanding Word Level Reading Problems: Assessment and Highly Effective Intervention

    • David Kilpatrick, PhD is associate professor of psychology for the State University of New York, College of Cortland. He is a New York State certified school psychologist with 28 years experience in schools and has been teaching courses in learning disabilities and educational psychology since 1994. David is a reading researcher and the author of two books on reading: Equipped for Reading Success and Essentials of Assessing, Preventing, and Overcoming Reading Difficulties.
    • The presentation will focus on how children learn to read words and why some children struggle. This knowledge will be used to design more educationally relevant assessments and to guide intervention recommendations.

    Friday 10/4/19 (morning session): Writing Intervention and Assessment Practices for MTSS Tiers 2 and 3

    • Gary Troia, PhD, CCC-SLP, is Associate Professor of Special Education at Michigan State University. He worked 10 years in the public schools as a special educator and speech-language pathologist, and 6 years as a clinical supervisor. Dr. Troia is an associate editor for the journal Topics in Language Disorders. He is the editor of the book, Instruction and Assessment for Struggling Writers:Evidenced Based Practices, and lead co-editor of Putting Writing Research into Practice: Applications for Teacher Professional Development. He co-developed a phonological awareness intervention program for young at-risk children (PASS).
    • This presentation will describe evidence-based practices for writing applicable to elementary and middle school students receiving supplemental instruction and specialized interventions in small groups or teacher-student dyads and review procedures for designing helpful progress monitoring tools to evaluate growth in writing.
    Friday 10/4/19 (afternoon session): Five Components of Effective Mathematics Intervention
    • Sarah Powell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Texas. Powell's research interests include developing and testing interventions for students with mathematics difficulties with a special emphasis on peer tutoring, word-problem solving, mathematics writing, and the symbols and vocabulary within mathematics.
    • This presentation will focus on evidence-based practices that should be included in effective mathematics intervention. Come prepared to learn about and discuss explicit instruction, multiple representations, mathematical language, fluency building, and problem solving instruction.
